Compilation of Movies

This is my last update on movies that don’t have to do with SIFF. Come Thursday, all I’ll pretty much be doing is watching, eating, and breathing SIFF. So doing a quick wrap up of some notable films that I’ve seen in the past two weeks.

The Host – Finally got around to watching the DVD of this. This may possibly be the first Korean movie I’ve ever seen that didn’t have someone smoking in it. Why it gets compared to Jaws is beyond me, so I would like to wipe that from everyone’s mind. The movie is actually a very fun flick that isn’t overly violent like so many things done nowadays. Much easier on the faint of heart.

Yes there is a monster. Yes there is  death. Yes there is killing. But none of that is too the extreme in my opinion.  I felt towards the end it got kind of hokey… But overall I enjoyed it immensely and I know for sure I will revisit in the future.

The Good, the Bad, the Weird -Keeping in topic of fun Korean movies, here is another one. This one is ‘tons’ of good fun and antics. A great western themed adventure movie that deals with a treasure map and ultimately of course, a treasure. Tons of action, humor and shoot’em ups. Not the ultimate movie of the decade, but well worth seeking out for a fun night of entertainment.

The Secret of Kells -This movie I would highly recommend. If you are stuck on curved, balloon shaped, smoothed color animation that dominates the scene now, this may not be for you (*cough* Pixar). A little reminiscent of the styling of Watership Down. Animation style is more old school and contains a story of substance with music scores that actually add to the experience. Artwork in the actual Book of Kells looks to be a strong influence on the animation, which is an absolute 2 thumbs up from me. Lots of scenes were contained in a filigree border which made it come across as a beautiful book with moving characters. I really can’t recommend it enough, a truly nice change from the normal crap that is out now.

The animation style of Kells reminds me of the Samurai Jack cartoons.
Gonna have to check that one out after the SIFF.
